RBS is looking a Head of Payments Instruments in London

Created as part of the recent bank wide restructure, the Payments Utility is a new business function accountable for managing the bank’s overall payment services.  This extends to include operations, technology, transformation, change, strategy and design, network management and market engagement. 

The Payments Utility serves the customers of our front line businesses whether they are a personal customer making a mobile payment, a Bankline customer paying a supplier or a large corporate client moving its liquidity around the world. 

It has a significant regulatory and transformation agenda which will see the rationalisation and simplification of our payments business into a more efficient, resilient and agile capability.

The Role

This is a new, influential leadership role within our Payments Strategy & Design team, where you’ll use your comprehensive knowledge and experience of the payments industry to manage and develop the bank's payment instruments, including BACS, Faster Payments, CHAPS, SEPA and overseas payments.

You will be responsible for the effective operation of the Bank’s payment instruments, working with the customer businesses, change teams and Market Engagement team in their development, volume forecasting, budgeting and cost recovery, scheme engagement and compliance.

You will own the end-to-end service and customer experience and work collectively with colleagues within the customer businesses ensuring the development and management of the payment instrument is aligned to their strategies.

The Responsibilities

  • Own and develop the Bank's payment instruments working collectively with the businesses, the Market Engagement Team and other teams in the Payment Utility ensuring the development plans are aligned to the customer business strategies
  • Drive payment instrument development alongside regulatory and payment scheme mandated changes ensuring that these are delivered in line and complement the Payment Utility strategy
  • End to end ownership of payment instruments acting as a subject matter expert around payment services and instruments ensuring all teams are engaged
  • Own the end to end customer experience for payments through customer journeys, moments of truth and direct customer insights, working with proposition teams in the customer businesses
  • Act as the guardian of payment standards including BACS, Faster Payments, CHAPS and SEPA and work to ensure compliance with these standards across the Bank
  • Own and define the cost recovery framework for payment instruments on which pricing models can be built by the customer businesses
  • Undertake volume forecasting and budgeting relating to the payment instruments
  • Develop business cases for new projects relating to payment instruments
  • Represent the Bank at industry working group level around the payments instruments
  • Ensure payment instrument compliance with conduct related policies and management of risks within agreed frameworks and appetites
  • Ensure that the function is compliant with all RBS policies, and delivers against regulatory and legal obligations
  • Line manage a team of 4 senior professionals

  • Confidence and ability to engage senior leaders and external parties
